How do I become an MLO with an active mortgage license?

4. Pass the National Exam.
5. Apply for licensure through the NMLS.

What is a Mortgage Loan Originator?

Under the SAFE Act, an MLO is a licensed individual or institution that works with a borrower to complete a mortgage transaction.

What is the SAFE Act?

The Secure and Fair Enforcement Act was enacted in 2008. The SAFE Act established standards for MLOs, including mandatory NMLS-approved education and testing. The SAFE Act applies to MLOs in all states, with the exemption of those working under a depository institution.

What is the NMLS?

The Nationwide Multi-State Licensing System and Registry ("NMLS&R") was created as a licensing and registration database for prospective and current licensees. The NMLS database can also assist consumers who are looking to verify licenses of both licensed mortgage loan originators and companies.
